About Fitzsimons, John, M.D.

Dr. John Fitzsimons is a certified Interventional Radiologist who has been practicing medicine for over 20 years. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1984 from the University of Notre Dame and his doctorate degree from Northwestern University Medical School in 1989. Dr. Fitzsimons began his surgical residency at Columbus Hospital in 1989.

It was around this time that Dr. Fitzsimons decided to pursue a new adventure in the United States Navy. Dr. Fitzsimons traveled to Pensacola where he trained as a flight surgeon. After serving three years in the Navy, Dr. Fitzsimons accepted a Diagnostic Radiology Residency at University of Florida Hospital in 1994. He then completed a Fellowship in Neuroradiology at the University of Texas in 1999, and a Fellowship in Vascular/Interventional Radiology at Baylor University Medical Center in 2002.

Dr. Fitzsimons is very experienced in interventional radiology and has worked at numerous hospitals in Texas, Georgia, California, and Tennessee. He has also held prestigious teaching positions at St. Elizabeth Health Center and John Peter Smith Hospital in the Radiology departments. At John Peter Smith Hospital, Dr. Fitzsimons accepted a tenure position in the level one trauma center. During this time, he performed numerous life-saving embolizations on trauma patients with serious arterial bleeding. Dr. Fitzsimons discovered his passion of both interventional radiology and vascular medicine at this time. Dr. Fitzsimons has been published in medical journals and has participated in various research studies.

Dr. Fitzsimons served in the United States Navy Reserve from 1991 to 1994. He was awarded the Naval Defense Medal, Sea Service Ribbon, and Active Duty Iran Conflict. Dr. Fitzsimons is also involved in many medical committees, including St. Elizabeth Health Center, Stroke Center, ED Committee, and Trauma Committee.
