How Much Does Spider Vein Treatment Cost?

The total cost of spider vein treatment depends on the severity of your condition, how many veins need to be treated, your insurance coverage, and other factors. If you are considering treatment for spider veins, cost may be an important factor.

Spider vein treatment may vary from patient to patient.  Most insurance plans will cover spider vein treatment if deemed medically necessary. This means that the treatment must be performed to address a medical condition, such as venous insufficiency or chronic pain. To determine whether spider vein treatment is medically necessary, your insurance company will likely require you to undergo an evaluation by a vascular specialist. The specialist will perform a physical exam and may also order imaging tests, such as an ultrasound.

At USA Vein Clinics, we offer a range of minimally invasive, office-based vein treatments that can improve the appearance of visible veins and alleviate painful venous symptoms like leg swelling, cramping, and fatigue. Like varicose veins, spider veins can cause painful and uncomfortable symptoms, increase your risk of developing dangerous health conditions, and impact your overall quality of life.

Spider and varicose veins are signs of underlying vein disease, also known as venous insufficiency. Vein disease occurs when one-way vein valves become strained and malfunctioning, allowing blood to flow backward and pool, usually in the lower extremities.

Before dismissing spider vein treatment due to cost, it may be helpful to have an experienced vein specialist examine your spider veins. After an initial evaluation, your doctor can develop a personalized treatment plan, check your insurance coverage, and provide a detailed cost estimate.

The cost of spider vein treatment can vary depending on:

  • How many veins are involved
  • Which treatment is recommended
  • How many treatment sessions are needed
  • Your healthcare provider
  • Your insurance plan

The average cost of spider vein treatment varies depending on the treatment method used, the number of veins being treated, and the geographic location of the treatment provider.

Sclerotherapy is the most common treatment for spider veins and involves injecting a saline solution into the veins, causing them to collapse and disappear over time. Laser treatment is a newer option that uses laser energy to heat and destroy the veins. Both treatments are typically performed outpatient and require little to no downtime.

If you are considering spider vein treatment, it is important to consult with a qualified vein specialist to discuss your treatment options and get an accurate cost estimate.

Will Insurance Cover Spider Vein Treatment Cost?

In some situations, insurance providers cover full or partial spider vein treatment costs. Even if your insurance plan does not cover your spider vein treatment cost, it may cover an initial evaluation by a vein specialist. If treatment is recommended at that point, our financial specialists will work with you to develop an affordable payment plan.

Since spider veins often occur simultaneously with varicose veins, now may also be a good time to get screened for varicose veins. Most major insurance plans cover varicose vein treatment.

Spider Vein Treatment Options

Spider vein treatmentAt USA Vein Clinics, we often recommend visual sclerotherapy treatment for spider veins.

Visual sclerotherapy, also known as spider vein injections, is a minimally invasive, office-based spider vein treatment that can be performed in less than an hour. Since spider veins are located close to the skin’s surface, visual sclerotherapy does not involve any surgery or special equipment such as ultrasound guidance or any other special imaging equipment.

During this quick procedure, one of our skilled vein specialists injects the targeted spider vein with a sclerosant solution. Sclerosants are substances that intentionally cause irritation, resulting in the collapse of the treated vein. Blood flow is immediately rerouted to surrounding veins, allowing the treated veins to be reabsorbed by the body.

All vein treatments at USA Vein Clinics are non-surgical, minimally invasive, and performed as short, outpatient procedures. Most patients experience little to no pain and can return to their normal daily activities immediately afterward, although you may be instructed to wear compression stockings for several days to aid healing.

Depending on the size, number, and location of your spider veins, other treatments and/or additional treatment sessions may be recommended to obtain the desired results.

How Many Sessions Will I Need to Completely Remove Spider Veins?

An experienced vein specialist can provide a personalized assessment of how many treatment sessions may be required to remove spider veins completely. Many of our patients experience improvement in the appearance and symptoms of their spider veins after a single treatment session, while others require additional sessions for their spider veins to disappear entirely.

Can Spider Veins Come Back After Treatment?

Once treated, spider veins are unlikely to return. However, people with previous venous issues are considered at increased risk of developing new spider veins in other locations.

To reduce your risk of additional spider veins, we recommend that you:

  • Maintain a healthy body mass index (BMI)
  • Exercise regularly
  • Avoid prolonged periods of standing or sitting in one position
  • Avoid tobacco use
  • Eat a healthy, well-rounded diet
  • Follow up with your vein specialist regularly

For personalized lifestyle recommendations, consult our experts. We can support your efforts toward better vein health and refer you to specialized programs for weight loss, nutrition counseling, increased physical activity, and smoking cessation to go along with the treatment.

WHY DO YOU NEED TO SEE A VEIN DOCTOR?

Can I Get Rid of Spider Veins Myself?

Unfortunately, spider veins do not disappear on their own. While you may have heard about at-home spider vein treatments like lotions and supplements, there is little scientific evidence for their effectiveness.

If your primary concern is aesthetics, cosmetics may help reduce the visibility of spider veins. However, if you wish to get rid of your spider veins and their symptoms completely, you are most likely to find success with specialized spider vein treatment.

Is It Worth It to Remove Spider Veins?

There are many reasons to seek treatment for spider veins. Treatment can alleviate venous symptoms, improve the appearance of visible veins, and reduce your risk of developing serious health issues, including blood clots and venous ulcers (open, non-healing wounds).

When making your treatment decision, remember that vein disease—the underlying cause of spider and varicose veins—is a progressive condition. Your spider veins and other venous issues are likely to worsen over time. Since small spider veins are often easier to treat than large ones, it may be more cost-effective to treat your spider veins sooner rather than later. This will also aid in curbing your spider vein treatment cost.
