USA Vein Clinics to Host Miami Wellness Event Amid Local Chikungunya Concerns
Miami, Fla., Jan. 26, 2026 — Following recent reports of a rise in chikungunya cases in Miami-Dade County, physicians at USA Vein Clinics, a leading nationwide provider of outpatient vascular care, emphasize the need to distinguish viral symptoms from vein disease.
While chikungunya is known for causing sudden high fever and intense joint pain, chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) presents a heavy, aching sensation and swelling in the lower legs. Physicians warn that as Miami-Dade residents monitor for viral symptoms, underlying vascular issues can mimic or exacerbate limb pain, leading to potential misdiagnoses.
“With Chikungunya cases on the rise in the Miami area, it’s understandable for residents to be on high alert when they notice sudden changes in their legs,” says Manuel Abella, M.D., of USA Vein Clinics. “However, mistaking a viral infection for a vein issue, or vice versa, can lead to dangerous delays in care.”
While both Chikungunya and vein disease can cause significant leg discomfort and swelling, the “type” of pain can differ.
- Chikungunya (Viral): Typically presents with a sudden, high fever. The leg pain is usually centered in the joints (ankles and knees) and often feels like an intense “stabbing” or “throbbing” that comes on quickly.
- Vein Disease (Vascular): Usually presents with no fever. The discomfort is a persistent, heavy ache in the calf or thigh muscles that typically gets worse at the end of the day or after standing for long periods. It is often accompanied by visible swelling or “spider” and varicose veins.
To help Miami residents tell the difference between the two conditions, USA Vein Clinics will host a free wellness event, “Let’s Talk Veins,” on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 13936 Northwest 7th Ave. in North Miami.
USA Vein Clinics encourages anyone with signs of CVI to attend the event. Attendees will have the opportunity to speak directly with vascular experts, receive preliminary vein screenings, enjoy a complimentary lunch, and learn about minimally invasive treatments that help alleviate symptoms.
