Natural Disasters Increase DVT Risk

A study from Scientific Reports suggests that natural disasters may increase a person’s risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a dangerous blood clot in the deep veins of the leg that causes pain and swelling. Researchers call for an increase in DVT awareness during natural disasters, as DVT can threaten a patient’s life.

This study specifically looked at patients’ increased risk of DVT after earthquakes in Japan. Japan experiences about 1,500 earthquakes per year, more than any other country in the world. After reviewing seven other studies on this specific topic, researchers confirmed that during a natural disaster, about 15.5 percent of victims developed DVT up to a month after an earthquake. This is due to the following factors:

  • Prolonged immobility in shelters or cars.
  • Stress and trauma can change how the blood clots.
  • Dehydration thickens the blood.
  • Lack of immediate medical care during the aftermath.
  • Older adults and those with health conditions such as varicose veins are already at risk for DVT.

While some parts of the world don’t experience earthquakes, the study’s findings can apply to other natural disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, tornados, flooding, etc. Researchers also concluded that other factors could influence DVT risk during a natural disaster such as:

  • Inactive lifestyle
  • Smoking habit
  • High blood pressure
  • Previous history of blood clots
  • Health conditions such as diabetes

Natural disaster or not, those living with varicose veins are at an increased risk of DVT. Left untreated, DVT can lead to a pulmonary embolism, where the blood clot breaks off and travels to the lungs, posing a risk to a patient’s life. This is why researchers of this study emphasize that early detection and treatment of DVT matters.

If you are experiencing symptoms of vein disease, such as leg pain, swelling, or the appearance of varicose veins and spider veins, visit a vein specialist as soon as possible. Vein treatment can reduce symptoms of vein disease and lower your risk of DVT.
