What Causes Varicose Veins?

Vein disease, or chronic venous insufficiency, is a common health condition that affects up to 17 percent of men and 40 percent of women. It is the underlying cause of varicose; veins, spider veins, reticular veins, and restless leg syndrome (RLS).

When left untreated vein disease can have painful symptoms which include swelling in the legs and ankles, tired-achy legs, itchy-dry skin, varicose and spider veins, burning sensation in the calf or thigh, or leg wounds that don’t heal.

Underlying health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure can increase your risk of developing varicose veins. If you stand or sit for extended periods, that too can impact your circulation and lead to vein disease.
