Understanding The Basics of Varicose Veins

Font Size:

Varicose veins appear as swollen, twisted and bulging veins that twist or turn in a rope like structure under the surface of the skin. Varicose veins are caused by dysfunctional valves that affect blood circulation. These diseased veins can present many painful and challenging symptoms that if left untreated can lead to serious complications such a blood clot or Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).
Some of the symptoms of diseased veins are:

  1. Painful varicose veins
  2. Leg pain or cramps
  3. Leg swelling or heaviness
  4. Restless legs syndrome
  5. Itchiness or burning
  6. Skin discoloration
  7. Skin ulcers

When inflamed, varicose veins may become tender to the touch and cause itching in the affected limb. Sometime the blood may also pool in the vein making it difficult to push the blood upwards. Blood pooling can increase venous pressure and congestion causing the vein to twist and bulge. There are certain risk factors that can contribute to the development of varicose veins such as pregnancy, obesity or genetics. A majority of people with varicose veins had a parent or family member with a similar condition. During pregnancy excessive pressure on the legs or abdomen may lead to varicose veins. Being sedentary also may contribute to diseased veins as inactive muscles offer poor blood-pumping action.
Age is an important factor that increases the risk for varicose veins. A previous leg injury may damage the valves in a vein which can result in varicosity.
At USA Vein Clinics we offer a highly effective, FDA approved, minimally invasive and non-surgical treatment for varicose veins- Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT). During this procedure a very thin (less than 1 millimeter) laser fiber is inserted into the diseased veins under real-time ultrasound guidance, followed by an application of laser energy to heat and close the malfunctioning vein. Other healthy veins take over normal blood flow in the leg immediately. Over time, the treated veins are absorbed by the body. This treatment is performed as an outpatient procedure and patients can resume normal activities immediately after the treatment.
