Varithena is an FDA-approved injectable foam treatment specifically used for vein conditions associated with the great saphenous vein (GSV) and the surrounding veins. This is an alternative procedure to other vein treatments that include surgery or heat-based treatments. Because this is a non-surgical procedure, anesthesia is not required allowing the patient to resume light activities the same day.
Prior to the procedure a topical numbing solution will be used on a small areaon the skin to make sure there is no discomfort during the procedure. During the procedure an ultrasound will be used to direct a small needle or catheter into the GSV so the Varithena can be injected. The Varithena will cause the vein to collapse making the blood flow into the healthy leg veins. The procedure usually lasts an hour, although the number of veins that need to be treated can affect the length of the procedure.
Post-treatment instructions typically include keeping the bandage secure and dry, wearing a compression stocking, and avoiding strenuous activities or exercises. Walking at least 10 minutes a day is also commonly prescribed after the procedure. This may not include all the post-treatment instructions that may be provided by the doctor. Additionally, some minor discomfort and swelling shortly after the procedure can be expected.
This minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure is very effective in the treatment of symptomatic varicose veins. Our vein specialists will determine if this is the best treatment plan for your individual needs.
