Elderly woman holding a pencil to her head: wondering if she should get vein treatment.

Venous insufficiency is a condition where the flow of blood through the veins is inadequate, causing blood to pool in the legs. It can be caused by several different vein disorders, but it’s most often caused by either blood clots or varicose veins. In most cases, abnormal veins are caused by a weakness in the vein wall that allows the vein to stretch out and enlarge. Frequently, this tendency is inherited and cannot be prevented. Other risk factors include prolonged sitting or standing, weight gain, leg trauma, and pregnancy all of which contribute to the deterioration of these abnormal veins in susceptible individuals. The question is if you are a good candidate for varicose vein treatment? To get the right answer here a few questions you need to ask yourself; Do you have large and bulging veins on your legs? Are the veins on your legs swollen, red, or warm to the touch? Are you experiencing skin discoloration or skin texture changes? Are you experiencing any of the following symptoms in your legs, ankles, or feet: Leg pain and cramps, heaviness and tiredness in the legs, burning or tingling sensation, tender areas around the veins, sores or skin ulcers near ankle, swelling and restless leg syndrome?
If you answered YES to any of these questions you are a candidate for vein treatment. At USA Vein Clinics our vascular specialists may recommend Doppler ultrasound to check blood flow in your veins and to look for blood clots. Doppler ultrasound uses sound waves to create pictures of the flow or movement of the blood through the veins. Although it is not very common, your doctor may recommend an angiogram to get a more detailed look at the blood flow through your veins, an angiogram can help your doctor confirm whether you have varicose veins or another condition. After the diagnosis your doctor will provide you with your customized treatment plan taking your medical history, tests and health condition in to consideration and start the appropriate vein treatment.
