The answer is yes. Varicose veins are definitely preventable but you must be careful because as the years pass and if you’re not paying attention to your lifestyle and the signs of your body, your legs could slowly but surely begin to develop varicose veins. And remember varicose veins are only an affliction of the elderly.

How can you prevent varicose veins?

Well let’s start off by stating why varicose veins begin showing up on your legs. What generally happens is that the valves that help regulate the flow of blood to and from your heart become weak which causes a backup of blood collecting in the vein which causes that area to swell and then become varicose.

Different factors are taken into consideration when it comes to diagnosing varicose veins such as:

body weight

genetic makeup

age

occupations

gender

Gender is a major factor in varicose veins as woman naturally develop a hormone that relaxes the walls of the veins (especially during pregnancy) and in turn makes the veins more prone to leakage. Combine gender with weight issues and you now have extra pressure on your veins. Add a sit-down occupation to that mix and you’ll be able to see how easily varicose veins can develop – but remember, varicose veins are preventable.

With the above list of possible risk factor contributors one can safely say that overall health is of the utmost importance to reducing the chance of or preventing varicose veins.

What can you do to prevent varicose veins?

OK I’ll get to the point: follow these little tid-bits of information below and continue to ask yourself if you’re doing enough to help avoid varicose veins in your legs or are they slowly creeping up on you. If you find that you fall into a few of the risk factors above following some of the steps below will help you avoid varicose veins.

Take note of each of these suggestions:

Exercise at least twice a week

Maintain your ideal weight

If you smoke – stop!

Take note of your body’s blood circulation (tight cloths etc.)

Look into a compression hose

Sit with proper posture (no slouching or adding extra pressure to your legs)

Inquire about low-estrogen birth control options

Stretch your legs and upper body at least twice a week

Raise those legs when you feel they need a break.

And lastly, know your body. Your body will always tell you if there is something not right, even with your legs. If your legs aren’t feeling right and you’re starting to see tiny or large veins growing on your leg, you should definitely see a varicose veins specialist and have them looked at.

Remember you can easily look into the above list and apply them to your life but the best and safest way to determine if you’re at risk of varicose veins is through a trusted doctor that specialized in varicose vein treatments and preventable procedures.

Do you find yourself sitting on the sidelines because of unsightly varicose veins? Do you stay home because of chronic itching or swelling in your legs? Do your legs sometimes feel so heavy you can barely lift them to walk?

Good blood circulation is one of the hallmarks of good health

Every day our blood is on the move, circulating through our body whether we’re working, playing, eating or sleeping. Healthy veins keep blood flowing to every part of the body, helping the internal organs stay in top condition. They also insure that our legs can keep us on the go— bending, stretching, climbing stairs, walking, running and dancing, too!

Most of us take healthy circulation and the sense of vitality it brings for granted. But what happens when you develop problems with your blood circulation?

About Venous Insufficiency

Circulatory disease, often called “venous insufficiency,” can have many symptoms. Sometimes you can see them clearly, as in “varicose” veins, which often appear on the upper and lower legs. You may also feel pain or heaviness in your legs, and experience itching and swelling that makes exercise uncomfortable. Other times, the outward signs of venous insufficiency may remain hidden. Without adequate treatment, vein disease can interfere with everyday activities and leave you feeling just plain miserable.

You Don’t Have to Suffer

Fortunately, no one has to resign themselves to a limited life because of vein problems. USA Vein Clinics—a network of state-of-the-art facilities specializing in vein disease management with vein clinics in Chicago, New York, Boston and Los Angeles—employ a wide range of techniques and treatments to address each patient’s unique condition and individual needs.

Yan Katsnelson, M.D., the founder of USA Vein Clinics, has trained at some of the nation’s leading medical institutions, including Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He served as attending Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon at the prestigious University of Chicago and also founded the Chicago Heart Institute. Most important of all, he has made helping people with vein disease his life’s work.

Aware of the suffering caused by vascular illness, Dr. Katsnelson has become a leader in the field of vascular surgery. Through his work, he and the other physicians of USA Vein Clinics have mastered innovative, minimally invasive procedures (such as EVLT or Endovenous Laser Therapy) that enable patients to heal and recover more rapidly than ever before. His greatest goal is to see his patients back on their feet and engaging in all the activities they enjoy with family and friends.

Take Charge of Your Recovery

With the establishment of USA Vein Clinics, Dr. Katsnelson has created a network of clinics where patients of all backgrounds can feel welcome and know they are getting the expert care and attention they deserve.

Medicare and most major forms of health insurance are accepted. If you’re concerned about your health coverage, an insurance specialist will be glad to speak with you regarding your eligibility and complete any paperwork required.

If you’d like to feel better and get back into your favorite activities, schedule an appointment by calling 888-76 VEINS. You may contact USA Vein Clinics by e-mail at info@usaveinclinics.com and a representative will get back to you within twenty-four hours.

Bella is my elderly neighbor. I’ve known her for a long time, but we’ve never talked like friends. I’ve seen her walking with a cane and it was obvious that every step was painful for her. But I’ve never felt comfortable enough to ask about her health.

A few days ago, I met Bella walking without her cane and looking a lot younger! I couldn’t resist asking what had caused such a metamorphosis in her life. She invited me to sit down on a nearby bench and told me her story.

I’m so happy to see you without the cane!

I couldn’t imagine my life without it for so many years. It’s all because of my veins. I’ve had this problem from my youth. It started with my first pregnancy. Nothing terrible—just spider veins. When I was 24 weeks pregnant my legs became swollen and tired. I felt terrible pain in my calves. My shoes didn’t fit me anymore. People told me not to worry, it happens from pregnancy, but it will go away. It never did. I had two more children and each time my problem worsened.

Couldn’t your doctors help?

What difference could they make? Endless diagnostics, tons of ointments and pills. Advising me to rest my legs on pillows, don’t lift anything heavy, exercise, no high heels and to watch my weight.

They were right. But who cares about such things when you’re young? There was no time for exercise with three kids. They were my gym. High heels? Don’t even think about it. We lived on the fourth floor so I ran up and down with babies, cribs, laundry, groceries. I ate fast food and eventually gained weight. So finally the varicose veins on my legs became like thick, blue ropes. I couldn’t sleep at night because of the cramps. My doctor said surgery was inevitable if I didn’t want to make my kids orphans.

Did you agree to have surgery?

I did. I really had no choice. It was many years ago. I’m 75 now. But I remember it like it was yesterday. The surgery was a nightmare from complications with anesthesia. I had horrible pain afterwards and couldn’t walk without crutches. Months later, as usual, I put bandages on my legs and realized that the surgery didn’t change anything. I started to cry. I was saying goodbye to my dreams of wearing nice dresses and skirts.

I prayed it wouldn’t get worse, but it did. A trophic ulcer appeared on one of my legs. [A trophic ulcer forms when stagnated blood leads to skin malnourishment and non-healing skin lesions.] Because of my growing fear of surgeons I tried alternative methods. Herb potions brought only short relief. Years passed. My two daughters and son got married. But I couldn’t help them care for my grandchildren. I was literally disabled.

But you didn’t give up, right?

Actually, I almost did. My Mom had varicose veins too. It’s in our family. Once I heard from a distant relative that her older sister was struggling like me. Six months ago she went to USA Vein Clinics located on Ocean Avenue in Brooklyn and was very happy with the treatment. I decided to give it a try.

After the doctor diagnosed me, I expected him to say, “It’s too late.” Instead, he offered me several Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) procedures. I’ve received four procedures already. I didn’t pay a dime. Medicare fully covered it. My ulcer is gone. And as you can see, I don’t need a cane anymore!

You even look younger now!

Thank you! And I feel younger too. For our wedding anniversary we’re planning a trip. I have never travelled because of the varicose. I’m so grateful to the doctors of USA Vein Clinics. They gave me a new life!

Daniel K., a computer engineer in a large telecommunication company. He’s 47 years old, has a wife and two kids. Everything would be fine in his life, if not for his long and exhausting fight with venous insufficiency, complicated by the formation of open trophic ulcers. Daniel was losing this fight until recently, when he discovered USA Vein Clinics. Today, because of his varicose veins treatment , he’s much more confident and comfortable. We asked Daniel to share his story.

When did your leg problem start?
I’ve been suffering from this illness for more than ten years. In my 20s, I noticed my legs were often swollen, achy, heavy, and bluish. I tried to ignore it. When it got worse, I realized I needed help. I tried traditional and alternative medicine, took all the prescriptions and followed all the advice, but instead of feeling better, I felt worse.

I understand you went through a lot of treatments.
Yes, quite a few. I even had surgery on one leg. It brought only temporary relief. All the symptoms came back, while on my second leg, a trophic ulcer appeared. [A trophic ulcer forms when stagnated blood leads to skin malnourishment and non-healing skin lesions.] Later, I was treated in one of the local medical centers, but I would say that I was tormented there for seven months. As it turned out, it was all useless. My ulcers didn’t heal, and the rest of the symptoms remained. I spent a lot of money because my insurance didn’t provide full coverage. Finally, I was offered deep-veins surgery with no guarantee of positive results. Now, I regret wasting those seven months. I wish I had gone to USA Vein Clinics first.

How did you find out about this clinic?
I heard about it from acquaintances of mine. They said USA Vein Clinics specializes in treating varicose veins and has state-of-the-art equipment for laser therapy. When I called, everything was very convenient from the beginning. I had an appointment in the evening after work. I was greeted by a very courteous staff and led to an Ultrasound room, where a technician performed a complete study of my lower venous system and some other study which I do not recall. The doctor came in, diagnosed me and explained how several Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) procedures can help my situation.

Is that a painful procedure?
Not at all. It’s done under local anesthesia. Right after the procedure I was able to drive myself home. I took one day off for recovery and the second day I was already at work. My ulcers started to heal after the first three procedures. Today I barely recognize where they were. My legs are not swollen anymore. It feels great!

Did you have to take any medicine between the procedures?
I took Ibuprophen during the first day after the procedure. After that, I didn’t need anything—no ointments or bandages. Following the procedure you have to wear special compression stocking. The doctor said that I will see a significant, stable improvement. It’s already working. The “unhealing” ulcer is gone!

Did the doctor ask you to follow a special diet or change your lifestyle?
He gave me basic, good-health advice—to lose weight, quit smoking, and drink alcohol very moderately. I eat smaller portions and it helps me too lose 10 pounds per week. I didn’t quit smoking yet, but I’ve cut back. Also, the doctor told me to walk a lot after the procedure—and to use the stairs. It encourages blood circulation. So I move a lot.

Was your treatment expensive?
Although my insurance didn’t fully cover it, in comparison with the previous treatment I was getting, it’s much more cheaper.

What would you say to people with vein problems?
Don’t waste time. Book an appointment with USA Vein Clinics today. You’ll be amazed by the results. If you’d like to talk with me first, I’d be happy to share my experience. Good luck!
